Galaxy Wildcats Finalists at OC Kickoff Classic 2009

Irvine, CA, 08.23.09 – As they had done the previous year, the Galaxy Wildcats played hard and fought their way into the Championship Final at the Orange County Kickoff Classic. The Championship game, this year against the Laguna Niguel SC White, was tied 0 – 0 at the end of regulation and was ultimately decided in PKs resulting in a 0 – 1 score with the Wildcats claiming the Finalist medals.  This year, however, the Wildcats did not allow any goals to be scored against them during regulation play in any of their four tournament games while scoring just as many goals (9) as they had the previous year.  What’s more, the new “balanced attack” from the Wildcats resulted in 7 different Wildcat players scoring goals during the course of the tournament.

In their first game, the Wildcats trounced the City Soccer Gazelles by a score of 6 – 0 while allowing just 1 shot at their own goal.  The second game was nearly as lopsided: 3 – 0 against the LAFC Chelsea White team resulting in a 20 point total for the 2 games.  On Sunday morning, the Wildcats played hard against a fast and aggressive Greater Long Beach Heat team which ended in a 0 – 0 tie.  Because of their point advantage, the Wildcats were able to win their Bracket over Long Beach and head into the Championship final vs. Laguna Niguel.  This year’s Wildcat team promises to be a very exciting team to watch with a stable roster of returning players plus some great new additions.  In fact, three players new to the Wildcats since last season (Nancy Lopez, Fiona Duerr and Jacquelyn Espinosa) all scored goals during the course of the tournament.  Other goal-scorers on the weekend were Ashley Coreas, Betsy Mebane, Siena Landay and Sasha Meyer.  With the Wildcats’ aggressive offense combined with a stiffened defense that doesn’t give up goals, the Wildcats are definitely a team on the move this season.  The Wildcats have been either Champions or Finalists in all 3 tournaments they have played in 2009.

Galaxy Wildcats Finalists in Johnny Lopez Mem Cup 2009

Moorpark June 21, 2009. The defending champion Galaxy Wildcats nearly repeated their 2008 success at the Johnny Lopez Memorial Cup 2009, ultimately coming up short in a penalty kick shootout with the Apex G95.  The Wildcats had an amazing string of successes at the tournament winning their first three games in shutouts: 5-0 vs the Kickers Blue, 6-0 vs Chivas USA and 2-0 vs the Falcons for 29 points, the highest total by any team in their age bracket. In the championship final against the Silver (nearly Silver Elite) Apex G95, the Wildcats scored first early in the second half.  The Apex team came back with an answering goal and the game remain tied through regulation and two overtime periods.  The game was ultimately decided by Apex scoring 3 penalty kicks.

The Wildcats have improved their roster since the end of the fall season and new players including Kenia Bonilla, Nancy Lopez, Caitlin Whiteside and Emma Schwartz all made strong contributions during the tournament. Another development in the tournament was the ascendency of defender Emma Polhemus as a scoring threat.  Two of Emma’s high kicks over the heads of opposing defenders resulted in goals for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Michall Singleton also distinguished herself with many amazing saves - preserving the shutouts and keeping the final tied up in overtime.  The Wildcats also had several guest players fill positions for vacationing Wildcats: Joan Rosello from the SAS Kickers and Ellie Benitez, Cheyenne Thomas and Hayley Pina of the Galaxy Devil-Cats all helped out. The Wildcats ended their 2008-2009 season as champions in two tournaments and finalists in two others out of the five tournaments played. The overall record of the Galaxy Wildcats from 2008-2009 was 25 wins, 14 losses and 6 ties. With that record to build on, the Wildcats and their coaches are looking forward to a very strong season in the coming year.

Wildcats win their GU13 Flight at Irvine Winter Classic 2009

wildcats take the goldRancho Capistrano, CA – The Galaxy Wildcats prevailed in GU13 Flight 3 of the Irvine Winter Classic (January 10 – 11th, 2009), winning the Championship final against the Yucaipa Athletic SC in a tense overtime shoot-out.  It was a weekend of tough competition, good opponents and nail-biting finishes in uncharacteristically hot sun for a January tournament in Southern California.  But strong team play and a “never let up” attitude did the trick for the Wildcats.  The Wildcats drew first blood in their opening game against the Ventura County Fusion YSA Blue who then battled back to tie the score on a penalty kick.  The game was decided literally in the final seconds as forward Lauren “LK” Kljucec sailed a perfect direct kick over the head of the Fusion keeper as time expired.  The Wildcats scored first in their other preliminary games against the FC Murrieta and the Vista Storm Red, each of which presented their own challenges.  But in another nail-biter, the Championship Final against Yucaipa came down to a 1 – 1 tie at the end of regulation.  Wildcat keeper Michall Singleton blocked several strong kicks from Yucaipa players as “LK” was able to put her shot past the Yucaipa keeper to end the game with a win.  Goals were also scored in the tournament by Wildcat forwards Jenny Drew Garabedian, Alex Marmureanu and midfielder Meredith Wilkerson.  But it was truly a team effort with strong play by all the defenders, midfielders, forwards and keepers on the Wildcat team that won the tournament.  As coached by Angel Vasquez and Peter Meyer, the Wildcats have elevated their play to a consistent constant pressure offense and defense that will undoubtedly serve them well in the future.

G13 Wildcats OC Kickoff Finalists

Irvine, CA – In a nail-biting finish, the Galaxy Wildcats narrowly lost the final in G13 Flight E of the 2008 Orange County Kickoff Classic.  Playing against the Westside Breakers Blue, the game was a 2 – 2 tie at the end of regulation and was ultimately decided by penalty kicks – the Breakers making one more than the Wildcats.   Despite missing four key players plus their regular keeper, the Wildcats played with lots of skill, heart, and soul in the tournament, winning their first two games against the Mission Viejo Riptide (4 – 2) and the San Clemente United (3 – 1).  Their game against the Corona United White ended in a (0 – 0) tie, which placed the Wildcats second in points for their flight.  In the flight final against the Westside Breakers, the Galaxy Wildcats (who never trailed) twice took the lead and dominated field position for most of the game until the Westside Breakers evened the score (2 – 2) on a free kick.  Then, as time expired, came the penalty kicks to break the tie, and the Breakers did just that on their last PK.  Special credit should be given to substitute keeper Michall (the Wildcats’ MVP) who filled in ably at keeper for the tournament.  The Galaxy Wildcats are very proud of what they accomplished, especially while missing so many key players.   The Wildcats have played in the finals for three of the last four tournaments entered and won the Johnny Lopez tournament in June.

Galaxy Wildcats GU12 Win Johnny Lopez Cup Championship

The heat was on and so was the competition as the Galaxy Wildcats prevailed, taking the championship in the 1st Annual Johnny Lopez Memorial Cup, June 21 – 22, 2008, hosted by the Moorpark Soccer Club. Battling unseasonably hot June temperatures, well over 100 degrees for most of the weekend, the Wildcats fought back from an opening game 1 – 2 loss against the SCSC Avalanche to win their next three games including the championship game, a 1 – 0 shutout of the tough Simi Valley Eclipse. This was a rematch of two championship teams, the last time they met was in the California Spring Cup V in Fullerton (March ’08) in which the silver elite Eclipse took the trophy while the Wildcats were the finalists. But this time, the Wildcats prevailed in a close and tough-fought match in the blazing sun and swirling wind. While the core Wildcat players led the way for the team, three new Wildcats also made their debuts at this tournament and each made significant contributions. Under the direction of Coaches Angel Vasquez and Peter Meyer, the Wildcats are expecting more big victories and an exciting fall season as they move to the GU13 level.
